Key Dates for Biodiversity in 2024

We share in the following, a few major dates related to biodiversity meetings.

  • 21-29 May, 2024, Fourth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation[1] (Nairobi, Kenya): Preliminary review of the Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) ahead of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) held in Colombia later this year.
  • 22 May, 2024, International Day for Biological Diversity[2]: Call to action to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • 22-23 May, 2024, Banque de France and Toulouse School of Economics Conference on Climate and Biodiversity[3] (Paris, France): Discussion regarding the understanding of climate risk and biodiversity loss and their consequences on financial stability and monetary policy.
  • 23 May, 2024, Helsinki Biodiversity Day[4]: A discussion to look into the role of biodiversity in businesses and cities.
  • 5 June, 2024, International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing[5]: Raising awareness around illicit fishing on a date which was marked by the first international legally binding instrument against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, the Port State Measures Agreement in 2009.
  • 5 June 2024, World Environment Day[6]: This year the campaign’s slogan is,‘Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration’ thereby marking the focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.
  • 6-9 June, 2024, European Parliament Elections
  • 12-13 June, 2024, Responsible Investor Europe Conference 2024[7] (London, UK): Discussion regarding sustainable finance developments and industry best practices with a focus on net zero progress, biodiversity risk management and the future of ESG data strategy.
  • 8-17 July, 2024, High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development[8] (New York, USA): Special focus on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and poverty eradication through the delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions.
  • 9 August, 2024, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples[9]: Raising awareness regarding the needs of these population groups by commemorating the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.
  • 18-20 September, 2024, French National Conference on Biodiversity[10] (La Rochelle, France): Focus on nature resilience, nature protection and restoration policies.
  • 21 September, 2024, World Biodiversity Summit[11] (New York, USA): Bridging climate and biodiversity through leadership and investments, synergies and sharing best practices.
  • 21 October- 1 November, 16th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16)[12], 2024 (Cali, Colombia): Review on the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and accelerating the process of access and benefit-sharing regarding biodiversity.
  • 11-22 November, 2024, 29th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC[13] (COP 29, Baku, Azerbaijan)
  • 25 November – 1 December, 2024, 5th Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution[14] (Busan, South Korea): Develop an internationally legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
  • 10-16 December, 2024, 11th Session of the Plenary of Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services[15] (IPBES, Windhoek, Namibia): Focus on the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food, and health; the determinants of transformative change; options for 2050 Vision for Biodiversity.

2DII today announced it is transferring stewardship of the Paris Agreement Capital Transition Assessment (PACTA) to RMI, formerly Rocky Mountain Institute. PACTA measures financial portfolios' alignment with various climate scenarios, including those consistent with the Paris Agreement. Under RMI’s stewardship, PACTA will remain a free, independent, open-source methodology and tool, and will continue to provide the financial and supervisory community with forward-looking, science-based scenario analysis to help users make climate-aligned financing decisions. RMI will invest in scaling up PACTA’s usability and applicability in day-to-day investment decisions as well as reporting requirements.
